Unexplored record from 1978 ,USA. Lankford has 2 lp on Crazy Cajun Records
CCLP-1035-Jesse Lankford: We’ll Take Our Last Walk Tonight LP (1978)
CCLP-1036-Jesse Lankford & C.L. Weldon: Houston's Natural Gass LP (1978)
I can't find anything about him in the net . As far as I know Lankford has also a lot of 45" in several labels. The first recording must be the single I'll play Dump-My Special Angel on TRIBE label at 1966. Leave a comment if you know something more
RIP from LP at 320@

Guys, my Dad Gary Loocke played bass in this band! He occasionally still plays with Jesse Lankford in Houston. I just googled the band and found this. sooo cool. If you want any more info let me know!
ReplyDeleteHey Chris! I know your dad and Jesse both from the 70's. In fact I saw your dad a couple of yrs ago playing at Martinis off Rayford. Where can I see him playing now? You can email me at "planglin@att .net". Thanks
DeleteHello Chris!! yes , i would like to learn more info about the other members of the band , and the date of recordings (1978 it's not true). Any new comment is welcome.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the contact

I will see what I can find out, I know that Benny Valerio (spelling) is playing guitar on the album. He was great, my Dad took me out to jam with him a couple years back. Sadly, found out recently that Benny passed away from cancer. I think I remember my dad saying that the recording was done around 1970 or so. I'll talk to him about it
ReplyDeleteHi Chris I Know Jesse...He Is A Friend Of Kelly Schoppa Im Trying To Locate Jesse To Let Him Know Kelly Schoppa Has Brain And Lung Cancer And There Is A Benefit In Pasadena Texas At The Lone Star Club Formerly Known As Mickeal J's Club On S Shaver On Oct 27,2013 Can You Possibly Get Ahold Of Jesse...My Email Is Lola1947@aol.Com
DeleteThanx for the infos Chris. Totaly unknown to me Benny Valerio, but....
ReplyDelete"Crazy Cajun" record company is a tax spam label. And we know Lankford's Lp's recorded early 70's but released at 1978 .Also the band MANDRAKE recorded 1 lp at 1973 but released at 1978 on Crazy Cajun (http://rockin-hood.blogspot.com/2010/01/mandrake-st.html).
Mandrake line up has 2 Valerio brothers!!!
Vinny (left-handed guitarist ) and Dany (bassist). Is there any connection between 3 Valerio ?? The other members of Mandrake ??
Who Knows ?? Anyway I appreciate your infos and i believe Lankford and Mandrake had excellent musicians ...
I'm responding to an old post but Jesse still comes out to sing with me a couple of times a month. I'm sure he'd be happy to talk with you if you haven't already talked with him. Contact Ray Pate on Facebook.
ReplyDeleteActually Jesse had a song out in 1965 called Romeo & Juliet and the flip was Your precious words...his brother George gave me a demo to take to Garner stat park, but they wouldn't play it. I kept it for over 30 years then it got destroyed and have not been able to get another copy. He was singing at Van's Ballroom back then with Leo and the Cymbal's.
ReplyDeleteI played bass for Jesse at Van's back in 65..
ReplyDeleteI own a 45 on poll parrot label of C.L. Weldon
ReplyDeleteasking forgivnes flip side -lets take a ride
Thanks fantastic and rare album.
ReplyDeleteGreat album, deserve to be reissued. Thanks a lot for the discovery. Greetings from France!
ReplyDeleteHey Jesse Lankford is my uncle and I'm so happy that people still appreciate his talent! He still hasn't lost his touch, is happily married, and is enjoying his golden years.
ReplyDeleteThere is no Vinny Valerio. Bennie is the guitarist who passed away several years ago. Danny, the bassist, is his brother and still living in Houston. The drummer on Mandrake was Jimmy Arrechica (sp?). It was a trio.
ReplyDeleteThey have albums available under Bennie Valerio and Texas Thunder recorded in the 90's. Bennie was a Sugar Hill session player and played live with many various bands in Houston including C.L. Weldon and Jesse Lankford's Natural Gas.
There is no Vinny Valerio. Benny Valerio is the left-handed guitarist and Danny Valerio is his brother and bassist. Mandrake was a trio, Jimmy Arrecchia was the drummer. Benny did lots of session work for Huey P. Meaux and also played live with lots of Houston bands, C.L. and Jesse's Natural Gas being one of them. Benny died in 2006.
ReplyDeleteSorry for the double post. Benny spelled his name Benny. I'm unsure of how Jimmy's last name was spelled other than it was a Hispanic surname. The Mandrake record has some very unusual mixes, very heavy reverb and heavy vocals on some songs. This I attribute to Huey Meaux's desire for hit records featuring vocalists. Benny Valerio was a great guitarist and that was undermixed on this record. i know, I was there when it was recorded.
ReplyDeleteAnyone know anything about "For the Love of a Girl?" recorded by CL?
ReplyDeleteCould this be re-upped please? THANKS!!
