HEADSTONE - STILL LOOKING
FROM ACID ARCHIVES
The opening seven minute title track is a killer journey through local underground guitar psych, and there's plenty more good stuff aboard including some more lyrical moves. Underrated LP, solid all through, better than many $1000 LPs. Great generic sleeve of eagle "still looking". The band also had three non-LP 45s which are pretty good. [PL]
~~~
Ohio was full of obscure hard rock bands in the 70s, and it’s surprising how many of their self-released albums have stood the test of time. Despite relatively simple songs, this album has real power. The long title track is the highlight, but the rest of the album comes close to the standard. The songs carry on a bit too long, but the solid guitar/organ sound is backed up by an energetic rhythm section and the overall feel of this album is strong, and gets better with repeated listens. They don’t seem like they were particularly talented, but they made the most of what they had. [AM]
FROM MIKEMUSICLOVER
From 1974.The album is sought-after among collectors and even the counterfeit is now hard to find . 3 non lp tracks from the singles included at Filling The Gap (4-LP) compilation. The 4 members are Bruce Flynn & Barry,David & Tom Applegate
BY REQUEST: TERENCE - AN EYE FOR AN EAR
Even though Canadian singer Black handled all of the vocals, Richard Gael and Patrick Riccio II were apparently the brains behind this studio project. In addition to producing “An Eye For An Ear," Gael and Riccio wrote most of the material and handled the arrangements. Perhaps intended as a concept piece, the collection is certainly a product of its late 1960s release (the viva Zapata styled cover was probably intended as a symbol of revolutionary militancy). Musically, the album offers up a mix of genres propelled by Black's rugged and soulful voice, most accompanied by a not-too-subtle mix of political and social commentary ('Power', 'Exiles', etc.), some of which is quite good. Highlights include the fuzz propelled rocker 'Rap' and the Stax-flavored 'Second City Blues'. An album more than worth picking up for two totally unexpected slices of psychotic, crazed electronic mayhem: 'Fool Amid the Traffic' and 'The Emperor'. If there'd been a couple more tracks like those two, this record would be a major (rather than minor) collectable, on the level of, say, Fifty Foot Hose.
BY REQUEST: SOLID GROUND - MADE IN ROCK
SOLID GROUND was formed in 1974. The members came from other band projects. Anders Berge and Gosta Hjelmqvist was earlier playing in a band called 4-ever, who played more proggresiv rock with lyrics written in Swedish. However they wanted to start something new and heavier, so they started looking for a bass and sologuitarist. After they had tried some bassguitarists, they came in contact with Peter Eklund who had finished job in another band. They realised immediately that this was the bassplayer they wanted. Two months later they came in contact with Bjorn Uhr, who they had known for a while. They asked him if he wanted to join the band, and so they become the SOLID GROUND. The band become Sweden’s heaviest band during the mid Seventies. Solid Ground signed up to SCAM records. A label owned by the former Violents and Hepstars member Hazze Ostlund. In 1975 the band played a lot of gigs around the Stockhholm area, and also some places outside Stockholm. They also recorded their first single record, with the two tracks: “Tell me” and “My song”. In January 1976 they recorded their album:”Made in rock”. The tracks on the record were recorded in only one day. Two days later they came back to the studio for the final mixing. For many reasons, the record didn’t sell quite well, and finally when the guys was called for their dutys in the army, they decided to quit the band.
HE 6 - GO GO SOUND (BOX SET)
Spontaneous 70s native rock music from Korea. Initially only 300 of these 2 albums were released as promotional copies.This amazing set shows an excellent mixture of psychedelic, Latin jazz rock, blues-oriented hard rock. Kim Hong-Tak's heavy fuzz guitar allover the set with best funky rhythm set [Cho Yong-Nam & Kwon Yong-Nam (later SJH & Yeop Juns)] and flute sounds.
HE5 & HE6 is another group from great Korean rock guitarist Kim Hong Tak. They were the most popular Korean rock group at 1960-1970s. They played heavy and hard psychedelic songs on live shows but they couldn't make this music style on albums because of record company's pressures.
They gave them some discretionary power to have them created the results which they had on He5/ "Merry christmas psychedelic album" and He6 "Would you Go Go dance" with He6 "Vol.1" and "Vol.2" But most their fans couldn't understand the tracks of these albums so they were forced to change to a more popular music style. At least they had their chances to make some albums with the music style they wanted after they became the famous rock group.
DEL JONES' POSITIVE VIBES - Court is Closed (first version)
FRONT COVER
FROM ACID ARCHIVES
Extraordinary eyewitness report from the Philly ghettoes surprisingly packaged in a non-aggressive funk/jam rock grooooooove that surpasses pretty much everything else in the genre, especially the opening title track with a westcoast jazzrock feel that just kills. Supported by the best housing project funk band anywhere Del Jones raps about the terrifying state of America '73, while the flipside deals directly with heroin use and how to get out of it. One of the top funkrock LPs ever, blows most of your starry-eyed white-boy psych LPs away. Del Jones is still active in the African-American cause as evident from the insert he penned for the honkie reissue. "You've got to liquidate your assets". [PL]
"Court is Closed" 1973 (Hikeka) [first 'psych' mix; group photo cover]
"Court is Closed" 1973 (Hikeka) [second 'soul' mix; Africa map cover]
"Court is Closed" 1999 (Loopden 2P-001) ['psych' mix; insert]
The first version of this album (sans the overdubbed horns of the second pressing) is a great document of true inner city grit. While the anger is surprisingly subdued, these guys obviously know the down and dirty life of which they sing. Despite all of the lyrics about drugs and being put down by the man, there’s an essentially positive message here. A few of the songs stretch out into long jams that build in intensity and really stand up well to multiple listens. There’s a lack of real “singing” here, with most of the stories being told in a kind of matter-of-fact sing-speak, and the few times real melodies break out make you wish there were more. Nonetheless, this is a killer LP: powerful, memorable, uncompromising and full of life, and it doesn’t sound like any soul/funk album you’ve heard. If "Maggot Brain" is "Superfly", this is "Sweet Sweetback's Badasssss Song". [AM] BACK COVER"Court is Closed" 1973 (Hikeka) [second 'soul' mix; Africa map cover]
OWL. - Of Wondrous Legends
Of Wondrous Legends is a Chicago baroque psych classic recovered from the dustbins of history. To the few who have heard it, it has earned comparisons to Tim Buckley, Pearls Before Swine , and 60s British prog-folk. O.W.L. was founded in 1968 on Chicago's north side by Stephen Titra. A founding member of the beloved midwestern hippie jam band Mountain Bus, Titra left that band just as their Dead-inspired, bluesy jams gained serious regional traction in order to fully devote himself to the inward looking, singular vision of O.W.L. O.W.L. was recorded at Chicago's Universal Studios over a six month stretch in 1971 and a handful of test pressings were produced and circulated, but despite serious interest from a number of major labels, this gem went unreleased. The passage of time only further helped ensure the album's place in near total obscurity until a copy of one of the test pressings was unearthed in a Chicago junk shop in 2004. Following several years of collaborative efforts on this lost epic, O.W.L. now sees its first public release after some 35 years of obscurity.
CAPTAIN MARRYAT - SAME
In my list of 20 best record ever from 60s & 70s. Yes !!!!
Reissue cover
Captain Marryat are from Glasgow, Scotland and recorded this demo album in 1974, released in a tiny pressing on the Thor label, hopefully to get an EMI or Chrysalis deal.
They wanted to record only a single but came up with a complete album of self-composed tracks. Since it was not that easy for a Scottish band to get attention down in London, this album was the only pressing ever done and sold at band gigs only.
5 musicians, great organ, vocals, extra heavy fuzz-guitar, drums and bass, amazing underground songs, influenced by Deep Purple, Uriah Heep and Beggars Opera, a true lost classic.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
